The nationwide Click It or Ticket Campaign kicks off today and will run through June 2nd. Law Enforcement officers out in droves issuing tickets to drivers and passengers who are not buckled up in an effort to save lives and prevent injuries.
So far in Iowa, there have been over 100 traffic deaths with 25 involving occupants not wearing seat belts this year. Research shows that traffic fatalities can be reduced if drivers and passenger simply remember to buckle up.
- Buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash
- Air bags are designed to work with seat belts, not replace them
- Observe guidelines to buckle up safely such as placing lap belt across pelvis and rib cage and not tucking shoulder belts behind your back
- Fit and placement are also very important for children and pregnant women
As we approach the Memorial Day weekend, not only will unfastened seat belts catch the eye of law enforcement, but any distracted driving, speeding, or impaired driving is sure to result in a ticket due to the risk all these activities pose to motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians alike.
Officers hope to educate the public, to make sure they are doing the right thing to get to their destinations safely. One state trooper summed it up saying, “our goal is not to knock on somebody’s door and tell them their loved one is not coming home.” The 2019 Click It or Ticket Campaign is sure to raise awareness across the state so more Iowans get home safely.
