Caution Urged as 2020 Motorcycle Season Ramps Up

Unfortunately, last week a motorcycle accident resulted in a fatality at SW 7th and MLK parkway in Des Moines. According to police, a teen driver’s failure to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic while turning at the intersection contributed to the crash.

With nice weather returning to the area, car and truck motorists are reminded to take extra precautions as motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians head outdoors. People on motorcycles, bicycles and those on foot are more vulnerable when accidents occur so it is important to drive cautiously – without distractions – as the summer season ramps up.

Those on motorcycles and bicycles sharing the road with cars and trucks should also take special precautions to avoid collisions. Riding defensively, wearing bright colors, and reducing speeds all help. Exercising extra caution at intersections – where many motorcycle accidents occur – can reduce injuries and save lives.

Motor vehicle pedestrian fatalities are on the rise across the nation and in Iowa. Pedestrians are reminded to cross at marked cross walks, watching out for motorists turning into their path at intersections. Just like motorists, pedestrians should limit distractions such as cell phone use, always vigilant when traversing the streets. People out walking should take special precautions  during non-daylight hours – never assume motorists can see you.
