Uninsured or Under Insured Car Accidents

As families prepare to head out of town for the July 4th holiday, it is a good time to beef up your auto insurance policy.  If you do not have uninsured/under insured coverage, you may want to consider adding them. The reason why? If you are involved in an accident with a driver with no insurance coverage or someone with very little coverage, you could be footing the bill even in accidents that are 100% not your fault.

A recent study reveals that over 10 percent of drivers carry no insurance at all. That translates into 1 in 8 drivers on the road that are not taking responsibility to protect themselves or others in the event of an accident. Even drivers who do follow the law and carry insurance may not have adequate insurance to pay for serious damages.

Adding uninsured and under insured coverage to your auto insurance policy can protect you financially in the event of a car accident. Uninsured auto insurance will protect you if you are involved in an accident with an at fault driver who does not have liability insurance; under insured auto insurance compensates you when an at fault driver’s liability limit is insufficient to fully cover your medical bills and other damages.

Of course, when an at fault drivers insurance coverage comes up short, you may sue the at fault driver to recover your damages, However, in many cases where a driver is uninsured, it turns out that they seldom have the assets to recover so you may be out of luck when trying to recover your losses from the driver.

For an extra measure of security in a time when many drivers are on driving distracted on their phones, impaired or otherwise not driving responsibly, it is a good idea to add uninsured/under insured  coverage to your auto insurance policy to avoid problems in the event you are involved in an accident.
